Ed Snider saw being the owner of the Philadelphia Flyers as a calling. Through this position Mr. Snider demonstrated how he understood the fans of Philadelphia. Not only did Ed
share our desire to win, but he had a desire to put a team on the ice that was as tough as the fans in the seats.
In 1968 in a game against the St. Louis Blues Mr. Snider’s passion and enthusiasm for his franchise gained a focus. He watched as the fans and Philly PD, not his players, brawled with the Blues. This fight in the stands made Ron Artest look like a true Panda’s Friend.(Watch Fight) When the fight broke out the Flyers were winning 2-0 but at the end of the game they had lost 3-2. The players came out flat, showed no fight and let the Blues skate right by them. Mr. Snider being so furious about their lackluster play began replacing the men on the team with the eventual Broad Street Bullies. Men that would stand up for themselves, their teammates and their city.
Let’s be honest with ourselves, the two things we want from our teams are that they’re tough and that they ooze passion because that’s Philadelphia. Ed Snider understood and personified that and that’s why Philly will miss him. He brought us Hockey, He brought us the Sports Complex but most importantly he brought a Passion, an Enthusiasm and a Will to Win to his position instead of sitting back and collecting money. Thanks for understanding us Mr. Snider, you will be sorely missed.
