Welcome back to the MLB Trade Deadline Philly baseball fans. It’s been seven years since you were able to warm your ears by rumors of the deadline when we acquired that Bobby Abreu wannabe Hunter Pence. July 29, 2011, a day that should be fondly referred to as the Day the Grinch Stole Christmas in July.
Here’s a list of things you need to know and remember about MLB Deadline Rumors:
1. This is a game of poker. Deceptions and backstabbings are necessary to get the sweet pot you want.
2. Teams put rumors out to fool other teams. Every team wants the best return on their blue chips and so putting a rumor out to Ken Rosenthal might get another team to pony up more.
3. This time is supposed to be fun, not heartbreaking. Your team is adding big time talent. Whomever you’re getting, you’re possibly getting the guy who puts them over the hump and into the post season. You get to watch this play out the rest of the season.
4. The Phillies have to dump prospects. They have too many. More prospects are eligible for the rule five draft next year so we need to protect them by dumping others now. Hopefully Klentak makes the Right moves.
