We will never know the reasons why hiring’s are made at the NFL level. Owners only shortly speak of their reasoning for a hire. Head Coaches never talk about why they chose one man over another. Many times men are given a shot because a friend is owed a favor(Tebow in Philly prime example). Others are hired because of their fathers’ and grandfathers’ résumés. Nepotism inside the NFL old boys club likely pushed two men upon Charles Kelly. No coach in their right minds would hire the two coordinators freshly fired from a 9-23 run in Cleveland. But allegedly Chip Kelly did. Billy Davis quickened the end to his first NFL head coaching gig and I do not believe Chip Kelly had any control in the matter.

Three years ago the second most important position in Philadelphia Sports was filled. The manner in how it was filled never made sense to me. Kirby Smart was the front runner according to most sources. He had been studying under college defensive guru, Nick Saban.  I was excited for him to bring the ‘Bama defense to our Philadelphia Eagles. A coordinator that would know how to use Fletcher Cox properly. A coordinator that wouldn’t play his mediocre secondary 10 yards off the line giving up quick slants over and over. Instead, Billy Davis was hired and I pulled my hair out each and every game.

What I do believe is that Cleveland connection, Joe Banner, reached out and secured his men jobs. Logic behind my reasoning: Billy Davis has run every type of defense. His short success as a D-Coordinator was when he ran a 4-3 for Arizona. He was fired there and then fired in Cleveland. So why would a man with little NFL connections hire him? Would he hire him to run a 3-4 defense? He wouldn’t. He would hire Kirby Smart. Joe Banner helped break my NFL heart twice.
