Halloween is right around the corner so a more light hearted post from youth football. Summer of 1993 saw me heading into my second full football season, one in which I would see my first starting job and the blockbuster Jurassic Park. All children wanted to see the hit. Parents took their children at their own risk. Mine had to be begged for weeks. When they finally obliged they made it clear that they wouldn’t be coddling me due to any nightmares. None were had. By all means I didn’t even flinch during the film. Now it’s extremely hard to believe that as an offensive and defensive lineman with flat feet that I was slow but alas it was true. My dad would work with me in our backyard in full pads each night after practice. As the days grew shorter and the nights grew longer our evening workout sessions became cloaked in darkness. As darkness grew so did the noises I heard in my ear holes.
Thud. Thud. Thud. Suddenly I was faster. I wasn’t running for football. I was running for my life. T-Rex was going to get me. I would run slowly to the fence and then bust to a whole new gear back to my dad so I wouldn’t get eaten. My parents got such a kick out of it that they’d invite friends, neighbors and relatives over to laugh at my fear. Fight or flight and when it comes to TRex, bust your ass to get out of his way.
