This may be a football town, but in Red Octobers football takes a backseat to baseball.
It’s not a surprise fans miss those October nights. It was a party. Each game 45,000 best friends came and rocked the Bank. You know why those days are gone. Why/How they might return quickly is what you want to know. Well at first you heard the sports radio rumblings saying one of the minority owners is looking to find a bigger role with the club. Slowly but surely his name started being thrown out there: Middleton. Good ring to it. Then David Montgomery took a leave of absence and rumors of a power struggle started being thrown about. I was in favor. I remember being told that Philadelphia is a small market town. Ha! Anyone with common sense realizes that more money is made when that ballpark is packed. How do you get the people out? Put a worthwhile product on the field. The Phillies spent money, just not correctly. With more and more money coming off the books, more hope should be welling inside. My reason for hope: I finally saw him the day the Phillies announced the hiring of Andy MacPhail.
I saw a man that wants to win. An owner that knows that winning is more important than the dollar because winning is what brings those dollars to the ball park. My phaith in this franchise rides with John Middleton. My phaith that he wants to be the next George Steinbrenner is hitched to my hopes of Red Octobers. Being the next George S comes with leaving a lasting legacy behind and John Middleton strikes me as that kind of man. Take solace Phils fans, I think we are in the right hands.
“Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next.” -George Steinbrenner
